Il semble que Pékin soit en position de favori pour les jeux de
2008, devant Paris, Toronto, Istanbul et Osaka...

Le Peuple chinois mérite donc d'accueillir les J.O... Mais avant tout, il mérite le
respect de ses droits fondamentaux, dont les libertés politiques !
LE TIBET EST OCCUPE
ILLEGALEMENT DEPUIS UN DEMI-SIECLE.
Tant que le gouvernement chinois ne respecte pas le Droit du Peuple tibétain
à l'autodétermination, et tant qu'il ne respecte pas son propre peuple, il ne mérite pas la distinction internationale d'accueillir les Jeux
Olympiques. |

La candidature de la Chine pour les Jeux de 2000 a échoué en raison des
violations des Droits de l'homme. Depuis, la situation au Tibet et en Chine n'a fait
qu'empirer. Les Tibétains vivent dans la peur des arrestations arbitraires, de la torture, et de la mort en camp de travail.
Donner les Jeux de 2008 à Pékin signifierait que les Droits de l'homme n'ont plus d'
importance; et cela aiderait la Chine à blanchir son image, sans que ses pratiques ne changent : pour effacer la mémoire du massacre de la place
Tiananmen, la Chine a demandé que la place accueille les épreuves de beach
volley !
Le comité d'évaluation du CIO a remis son rapport le 15 mai. Le chapitre sur
la Chine ne dit pas un mot sur la situation des droits de l'homme...
Même des membres occidentaux du CIO ont pris position pour Pékin. Tel
l'allemand Walther Troeger, pourtant conscient de la situation des droits de
l'homme en Chine. A t-il oublié la tenue des Jeux à Berlin en 1936 ? Les Jeux
avaient-ils favorisé l'ouverture d'esprit du régime hitlérien ?
Le vote final aura lieu à Moscou le 13 juillet 2001 pour départager les cinq villes
finalistes. Une manifestation aura lieu sur place, après celle qui s'est tenue
à Lausanne le 15 mai devant le siège du CIO.

du CIO.

Dear Members of the International Olympic
Committee,
I am writing to urge you to oppose Beijing's bid for the 2008
Olympics.
China has brutally occupied Tibet for more than fifty years, and regularly detains and tortures both Tibetans and Chinese for peacefully
expressing their beliefs. A country that flagrantly violates international laws in this manner should not receive the distinction of
being an Olympic host.
Recently, some Chinese who dared to openly oppose the bid have been imprisonned in Laogai. Is this sport?
More violently, in a renewed "Strike Hard" campaign, china has publicly executed some 480 people in april 2001
only. Do you want to see the next executions in the Olympics stadiums?
Since China invaded and annexed Tibet in 1949, more than 1.2 million
Tibetans have died from famine, imprisonment, torture and execution. In Tibet today there is no freedom of press, speech, assembly or religion,
and Tibetans are now facing the most serious crackdown on their religious freedom in
years.
It is inappropriate for China to host the Olympic games while its
government is persecuting people for adhering to their cultural traditions or expressing their views. While China speaks loudly of its
economic and social development in recent years, the government has made no progress whatsoever on its treatment of human rights. "Social
stability" in Tibet is enforced by at least 300,000 Chinese troops. Although ideally the Olympics might be outside the sphere of politics,
China's bid is most certainly not. Approval of China as host of the Olympics would signify approval of its brutal authoritarian regime and
its occupation of Tibet.
Until China leaves Tibet, it does not deserve the honor of
hosting the Olympic games. Please support human rights in China and Tibet and vote against China's bid in July.
